Do Gaming Walkthrough Guides Spoil The Enjoyment?

By Musa Aykac

I often wonder about the wisdom of using walkthrough guides; not because I think that this is a form of cheating but because it takes a lot of the fun out of the game. Surely you don't get the same satisfaction from completing a game if you only did so because you followed instructions.

Where is the sense of pride in that? These games really are expensive but once we get them we seem hell bent on getting them finished as soon as possible and don't realise that the actual playing of the game is what gives us the real pleasure.

When it comes to gaming, most of the fun is had when a particularly tricky part is overcome by us and even more so if we have been stuck at this part for a number of days. However all you have to do with a walkthrough guide is to follow instructions so you never have any excuse for being stuck in any level. In fact I sometimes wonder if it would be better to just look at the guide and not waste money on the game at all. Or maybe we could purchase games that play themselves and we can just sit back and look.

There are times when people want to give up on a particular game because they simply cannot get past a certain level and when this happens it is understandable that they may want to have a look in these guides. Sure is there any real harm in just having a little look?

The problem is though that once we look at a walkthrough guide once we are going to want to do it again and again. But if you persevere with the game and keep trying then you will eventually work it out and this really does bring so much more pleasure and satisfaction.
