The Position Of The Nerd Is Under The Radar But That Does Not Mean That They Aren't Essential

By Jon Izzard

It is a pity that techies are viewed as being in someway strange or unusual. Our culture is now at a moment where it is predicated almost completely upon those who would be seen as techies by those who see themselves to be un-geek. And yet for everything from search engine optimisation to producing the most useful and intricate IT systems it is the army of geeks that turn them out. When you consider the least nerdy types such as armed forces personnel, their lives depend upon the astonishingly clever weapons they use. The Apache helicopter for example is buily to identify and prioritise hundreds of targets in one go and can release a missile that will find it's own point of adminssion into the building it's been pointed at. Systems built by the techies.

If somebody was a low level nerd, then working for an affordable SEO company would be perfect as a technical know how isn't necessary but if you are extremely capable already but wanting to do more, then getting into software consultancy is the way to go. But, focussing on search engine optimisation as an immensely vital function, making the client's website visible to their potential clients is the difference between the firm surviving or not. The upside a proper affordable SEO company gives is that for a controlled budget, the links to the website can be displayed to unlimited visitors. Ad-word promotions with a fixed daily budget have the immediate disadvantage that when the budget limit is achieved, the link is no longer presented and you still pay whether the visitor buys something on the site or not.

Having done, and going on with, software consultancy as well, I can proclaim with some gravitas that it is a lot less satisfying although the most fun part is having finished the program, testing it and discovering the parts that are faulty and fixing them. That genuinely is a delight in spite of the regular frustration when you can't work out why it isn't doing what it's told to be as after a while you just know that the solution is very simple and staring you in the face.

But the software consultancy I usually do now is advising small business on the software they employ in their companies and how they can sort out the best and up to date versions and updates. So many firms I have helped use very old versions which are not really up to the task, specifically when they pass files and data with clients, suppliers and other concerned parties as the day will dawn when they can't access a file properly. Which can be embarrassing at best, and perilous at worst as there will be a stop on any work until the situation is resolved.

But the best thing by a long way, is search engine optimisation just as it is such a vital service and although it is a bit of a black art, it is fairly straightforward and highly rewarding. And, as long as one stays an affordable SEO company, the relationship with the customer should be a long one as the task is continuous to get the client's site at the peak of the search results and then keep it there. And since the nature of the job is based on results then expenditure can be regulated, and if required, extra pages can be inaugurated to the SEO portfolio.

The clients may be the most rugged people known among the species, they could be the epitome of cool and sophistication, but it's the geeks that keep them supported but, happily they will be well out of the way, unseen but essential.
