An Alternate Music Scene In Mumbai

By Reena Wadwani

In recent years, the live music scene has quickly gained the appreciation of India. Live music venues are now part of the popular nightlife of India, including Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore. In these cities have seen a live show has become a fashionable alternative to a DJ show.

These days, during the week there are at least three or four venues that host live bands. These bands play music from a variety of genres from rock to pop to metal to jazz and blues. And there is a massive alternative culture that is emerging along with this.

This is a huge step up from where the live music scene was a few years ago. Back in the 90's such music was only confined to college festivals. Bands used to play in the restaurants and lobbies of five star hotels. But there were no other venues for live music other than large concerts.

Talk of the town was one of the most famous venues for live music. The restaurant attracted lovers of jazz and other such retro genres and was truly the talk of the town. The location of this restaurant is what was famously known as Jazz by the Bay on Marine Drive in Mumbai.

This was a restaurant that primarily promoted Jazz music. However it could not sustain on only Jazz alone and changed its name to Not Just Jazz by the Bay which is a familiar Mumbai landmark today.

Until a few years ago the restaurant and nightclub was one of the only venues that promoted live music in the city. Their regular music nights attracted people from all over the city as well as visiting musicians. Other than this, Razzberry Rhinoceros in Juhu was one of the only venues that promoted rock and metal.

However, in recent years have brought many places in Mumbai for music lovers. Some large sites have opened and closed due to interference from local parties. Even with recent tax increases Entertainment threatens to put a collar on the performance of live music in town.

But the industry continues to find new ways to reach their audience. A recent Mumbai Jam band, due to restrictions because of the Verdict of the Ayodhya land case, was forced to release their music video online. And they succeeded by getting a record number of hits in the first night of the release.

More and more bands are realizing the value of the online medium for marketing. To this effect there are now a lot of online websites that aim to promote artists and help them to connect to their fans. They allow musicians to post unreleased music videos and audio online. A recent online promotion site has even tied up with a virtual 3D world to promote their recent music festival.
